In 1868, a humanities scholar from Bagnols, Léon Alègre, turned eight rooms on the second floor of the Town Hall into a museum that embraced many subjects - where paintings hung next to fossils and animal specimens, steam machines and Roman ruins. In 1917, the painter Albert André became the curator of this museum. Under his leadership, and thanks to the generosity of his painter friends such as Renoir, Monet, Signac, Marquet, Bonnard, Jean Puy and Rouart, Vollard, Durand-Ruel, Elie Faure, Paul Clémenceau and others, the museum took on a different look and began to focus on figurative, modern and contemporary painting. In 1971, the donation from Georges and Adèle Besson added to this outstanding collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist painting that Albert André had gathered. Illustrious artists such as Matisse, Bonnard, Van Dongen, Berthe Morisot, Maillol, Picasso, Camille Claudel and others are the pride of this collection patiently and passionately assembled by an enlightened art lover and artist himself.

Today the museum continues to add to its collections in the tradition of friendship initiated by Albert André.
